The windows at a laundromat on lower Solano are covered with children's valentines right now. They are made of familiar stuff: construction paper, glitter, scissored doilies, and sweet, if worn, messages -
"Happy Valentine's Day!"
"LOVE"
"Be mine."
My favorite though was this one, a simple, semi-symmetric purple heart with two lesser pink hearts attached, all smiles.
"I SEE YOU!"
At first I laughed, in appreciation of the irrepressible weird of weird kids. We rule, no? Then I took a few steps and realized it wasn't so strange. It was precocious and perfect. What more could we ask of love than to be seen for who we are?
Happy Valentine's Day.
